I am age 83 and have been having breakfast at The Pantry since the day it was opened. Nothing anywhere in the whole world can compare with it. But equally important is the secret story of the staff. See if you can discover the secret.

My favorite breakfast place in California, bar none, and I've tried quite a few! I dread going to LA, but knowing I'll get breakfast at the Pantry helps to make things bearable.
Portions of meat for breakfast are large. Plenty of potatoes too. This is the way breakfast should be.
You'll have to go to the east coast to find any place else like this.
I have 2 of their solid, heavy coffee mugs at home (bought, not stolen!) that I use all the time.
If only I could find something like this place near my office....

Their pancakes have some kick! I dont know what they put in them, but the minute i took a bite it sent the most unusual flavor towards my taste buds. Stick with the buttermilk - the buckwheats are bland and fall apart easily. Fast service and PERFECTLY griddled pancakes.

The Original Pantry Cafe has that 1930's "Great Depression" soup kitchen look to it, which adds nostalgia to the whole Pantry expierience. Some of the food is a bit on the greasy side, but you can't beat the taste, quality, portion size, price and serivce. The enormous omeletes are delicous, especially the chili cheese omelete. The pancakes are awesome even the buckwheat pancakes are very tasty and good for those who are gluten intolerant. They also carry sugar-free pancake syrups for those on a sugar-controlled diet. The bacon is large sliced and the ham steak is huge. The home fried potatoes are made from real, unfrozen cut Idahos. The meal also comes with thick sliced sourdough bread, which if you prefer can be toasted on the grill. They also carry other types of bread to go along with your breakfast. Most meals also come with coffee or tea (hot or ice). This restaurant is sure to fill you up. If your looking for a good old fashioned American breakfast with friendly speedy service, palatable food, plentiful portions and reasonable prices, this is a place to try.
They only take cash, although they do have an ATM inside.

The Pantry has been in downtown Los Angeles since Hoover was president. In that time period it has been open 24 hours a day everyday and for that entire span there has never been a time when the Pantry was without a customer. The food is great tasting and great on the wallet. Generally for breakfast there is a line out the door, but once you're seated they serve you very quickly.

I love the pantry's pancakes!! I have yet to try the buckwheat kind but I'm sure they are delicious! Anyway everything I've had from the pantry including pork chops and eggs with a huge plate of potatoes and toast is great & really inexpensive. Just remember they only take cash!

The Pantry is an L.A. Institution, and for good reason: huge portions of great American breakfast food at great prices. One egg at the Pantry is equivalent to two at most other restaurants; the pancakes are incredible, you get a mountain of hash browns, and the service is FAST. Eat breakfast here and you won't be hungry until dinner -- or maybe not even then! This isn't a gourmet breakfast -- it's more like what you'd expect to see in a John Ford movie. Highly recommended!

My dad grew up on a farm in Iowa. He was told to go west young man, and he did. Dad arrived in Los Angeles in the late 30's. One of the first places that he ate was at the Pantry.
We recently stayed downtown L.A. for a weekend before taking the coast starlight train to Seattle. We had a wonderful dinner at the Pantry. The steak was more than the plate, well close anyway. The service was just as dad had described 60 years ago. They seated us in the back left hand corner, just perfect! 3/4 the way through our meal the place was packed and we invited a couple to 'split' our table with us, they were pleased with the invitation. Just a great down home place in the middle of a 3-plus million populated city. Very friendly and comfortable place to enjoy a bit of yesteryear. What more can I say? We will be back there again! Try this place, please. This is not an ad, we live in Santa Cruz, CA.

Owned by the former Mayor of LA, Richard Riordan. Just a few blocks from the Staples Center in Downtown LA, its a perfect place to go after a game. Its also a great place to start your day with an egg and their fried potatoes. They're friendly with the butter and sait so you may want to hit the gym after your meal.
