As far as I can tell, this restaurant is doing EVERYTHING right. The service is friendly and efficient, the coffee is great, and the food...

Original Pancake House

I had the 49'er Flap Jacks, described on the menu as "three large chewy-gooey thin pancakes". Don't let the "gooey" throw you off. These are just deliciously simple thin pancakes griddled up to perfection.

My special breakfast friend had their "famous" Apple Pancake, described on the menu as "oven baked with fresh apples and pure Sinkiang cinnamon". If you don't know the beauty of an oven-baked, almost custard-like pancake loaded with flavor, you should make this the place to learn about it. They're not kidding when they called the apples fresh and inferred that the cinnamon was special. What does this pancake taste like? It tastes like quality.

The servings are huge. I managed to eat all of my flap jacks, but... and this is no lie... when I stepped on the scale the next day, I'd gained a pound and a half. My friend barely dented her apple pancake. The leftovers are in our refrigerator. Incidentally, a cold apple pancake from The Original Pancake House tastes like an apple bread pudding... not as good as when it was warm... but still truly delicious.

I'd like to make one additional shout out. Their farm style sausage links are amazing. The bacon... not so much... slightly cool on delivery and not as crispy as you might hope... the bacon was the only negative in an otherwise positively perfect meal.

I live in Los Angeles... a little over an hour from this restaurant. I'm already making plans to make the trek back later this month. I have to try one of their omelets. They are so big, fluffy and beautiful. I hope they taste as good as they look. Based on my experience so far, I bet they will.

A+

If you're thinking "just a pancake," this ain't it. If you're thinking "a special kind of pancake," this is your place.

On a monthly basis, my wife and I travel an hour to get two of their most amazing offerings: the Apple Pancake and 49ers.

As for size, the 49ers hang over the edge of the plate. It's "constructed" so the edges are crispy and the center is soft and melts in your mouth. A little butter, syrup, hot coffee and you're in heaven.

The Apple Pancake (yeah, I used capital letters) is amazing. It's baked, almost 5 inches tall as it comes out of the oven (you can see the steam whistling out as it sinks a bit during the walk to your table), is covered by 2 or 3 sliced and sauteed apples and topped with probably 2 cups of sugar-cinammon that melted all over it in the oven. My wife has half; I have the remainder the next morning for breakfast. Superb!

And, yes, they have tons of other great-looking food. (Living in other states, we've been OPH fans for years but...these really are the only two we order because they're so good.)

Seems very expensive relative to what you get. I mean it's like $9 for simple pancakes and sausagelus tip plus coffee... two people run $30.

I joined this site just to put in my favorite Redondo Beach breakfast joint. If you want some incredible pancakes (about thirty varieties), the biggest and best french whipped omeletes you've ever tasted and really appreciate great service, The Original Pancake House is a sure bet. Come early to beat the crowds. Try the 'dutch baby' - its their specialty, but you cant go wrong with a bacon and swiss omelete with blueberry pancakes on the side. Although a little pricey you will feel it was worth it thanks to the serive and the incredible food. Try it!
