Oatmeal With Dates
(1 serving)
- 1 cup oats (not quick oats)
-
1 cup dates (pitted and halved)
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
2 cups water
-
1/2 cup milk
-
1 teaspoon brown sugar
As originally submitted, this recipe requires a double boiler and a cooking time of 45 minutes. I find that it works just as well if you bring the water, milk and salt to a low boil in a regular pot, add the oats, reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 6 minutes. Much faster and just as good. Someone commented that there was too much sugar. Personally, I thought there wasn't enough. I increased it to 1 packed Tablespoon of brown sugar. I also chopped the dates into smaller pieces for better distribution in each bite. (This recipe was submitted in 2002. It was tested and photographed in October 2014.)
How To Make Oatmeal With Dates
Bring water to a boil. Add salt. Add rolled oats slowly. Cook over low flame in a double boiler.
Cook 45 minutes.
When done, add the dates. Mix thoroughly. Serve with milk and brown sugar.
This seems simple, but the dates really add a terrific flavor.
