Earl's is one of the country's best breakfasts, and a goldmine for road trippers and Route 66 freaks. Earl's has been hosting Gallup and road travelers since the 40s, although they moved a few years ago from the smaller place across the street to the new more spacious family digs. Consequently, there is not a lot of vintage charm to Earl's, it looks like Denny's, BUT it's very comfortable (nice big booths!) and the service and food more than make up for what it lacks in decor.
You will not find grits this real and good this side of the Mississippi. And while all the egg dishes are awesome, you really gotta try the local breakfasts -- the breakfast burritos, enchilada dishes which come with your choice of green or red chili sauce. If you hit this place in August/ September you are in the New Mexico chili harvest season and this is one heavenly breakfast treat. You can have these dishes with either tortillas, toast or big fluffy biscuits.
Excellent coffee which is always refilled before you even look up to ask, great service, sooo friendly, and often the manager comes round to see how you're doing also. Nearly all the waiters and waitresses are Native Americans. Local Indians also set up and sell their jewelry and dolls outside and the local clientele is almost all working Native American families. It's one of the coolest places in the west!
I love this place so much that we actually map our road trip time to perfectly coincide with breakfast in Gallup to hit Earl's as the best way to start our day.
