I love Colorado, and I like kitchens. So you'd think I'd be awfully pleased with the Colorado Kitchen. It's recent four-star ratings in local reviews made it top my list for must-try breakfast places, and since my girlfriend and I have a standing Saturday breakfast date, we gave 'er a whirl.
The decor is kitchey-cute, 50's kitchenette-style dressed in red accents, doorknobs attached to the wall, and black-n-white checkerboard floors. The tables and chairs are also a blast from the past. The menu is short, and sort of disappointingly organized. If you want bacon and eggs in one go, you'll have to order one or the other as a side. In fact, my poor vegetarian girlfriend, who usually doesn't have much trouble with breakfast places, had to order a meal of sides, as the limited listings had things like catfish and crab and sausage in abundance. I got the cornmeal waffles n' bacon, with a yummy scrambled egg on the side.
The coffee was flowing and in nice, big mugs, but it took one whole glacial age for our actual food to come. We did enjoy a bucket o' holes while we waited--fresh donuts are the house specialty-- and they were delish.
Overall, an okay experience, but ordering off the menu is such a frustrating, limiting experience, and the harried (though perfectly polite) staff tipped the air in the direction of chilly, the opposite of warm and homey. Considering how long the only sort-of good food took to get to our table, we won't be making the CK our regular place.
