When we walked into the Main Street Diner, the small room was dominated by a table in the middle, stacked with coffee cups and a couple of coffee pots. A lady sitting and watching the corner television noticed our interest and explained that "here, we get our own coffee." We complied and sat down. After a couple of minutes a teenage boy came out to take our order - I told him we still needed menus. Not so, said he, "We have the usual breakfast things, but not sausage gravy and bisquits, or waffles." I was unclear if they had those things on another day. I ordered eggs, hashbrowns & toast, my companion ordered a pancake, hasbrowns & toast. Luckily for me, they didn't have the english muffin that I had initially asked for - the toast was obviously made from fresh homemade bread, and when spread with real butter, was easily the best toast I had ever eaten - crisp on the outside, gluten-chewy in the middle, with over tones of subtle yeast. The hashbrowns were fresh, crispy and homemade. The eggs were cooked perfectly, and the pancake was excellent too, I was told. Even better yet, I got too listen in to the two tables of little old local ladies gossip about town news with each other and the teenage boy. The restaurant had the appearance (further confirmed with the personal-items-stocked restroom) that some person or persons lived in the back of it. Sublime.
