Date Scones
(10 servings) Printable Version
- 1 and 2/3 cups self-raising flour
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 5 Tablespoons butter - cubed
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar - packed
- 1/2 cup dates - chopped
- 2/3 cups milk
- 1 large egg - beaten
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
Prepare a large baking sheet by coating generously with cooking spray.
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, nutmeg, salt and baking powder. Add the brown sugar and butter pieces and combine with hands until mixture resembles wet sand. Fold in the date pieces.
Slowly add the milk and mix with hands until well-combined and dough-like. Try not to over-mix.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll it out until it's about 1 and 1/2 inches think.
Cut it into 10 equal patties and place them on the prepared baking sheet fairly close together, but not touching.
Brush the tops with the beaten egg to create a glaze.
Bake for about 15 minutes until lightly golden brown.
Let them cool at least 5 minutes before separating and removing from the baking sheet.
You may need a touch more or less milk than indicated. The dough should be somewhat soft, so adjust the milk so it's not too firm.

Good, but needs at least double the amount of brown sugar. It's not so much that they need to be sweeter, but more because the brown sugar brings out the flavor of the dates.
