Basic French Toast
(4 servings) Printable Version
- 10 to 12 slices white bread - preferably day-old (absorbs more egg mixture)
- 1 cup milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon sugar - optional
- 1 teaspoon salt
- butter - for frying
- maple syrup or other topping
Over medium-low heat, heat griddle or skillet coated with a thin layer of butter or margarine.
Place the bread slices, one at a time, into the bowl or plate, letting slices soak up egg mixture for a few seconds, then carefully turn to coat the other side. Soak/coat only as many slices as you will be cooking at one time.
Transfer bread slices to griddle or skillet, heating slowly until bottom is golden brown. Turn and brown the other side. Serve French toast hot with butter and syrup.

Try this without the sugar, a touch less salt and eat with Mr Heinz's ketchup on the side for a savory treat.

Add a teaspoon of vanilla and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and this is how I've made it for decades. Get day-old bread on Friday for the best French toast on Sunday.

I put cocoa, vanilla, and cinnamon in mine and everyone loved it! I also found out you can use one egg per slice of bread and that using evaporated milk can make it lighter and taste better. Overall, I think it was a good recipe but, it needed more spice. 3 EGGS :)

We made this and then used the blueberry compote from your Red, White and Blueberry Pancake recipe for the topping. It was a match made in heaven! Thanks Mr. B!

I make french toast all the time myself except with wheat bread and a little bit of powdered cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar all mixed in the bowel along with the basic milk and egg(s).

Very good. For the bread, you really don't need to use white bread - wheat bread works great.
