I hope you're having an amazing summer. It's July and that's means the 4th of July... and patriotism and America... and American Breakfast Recipes. Here's my tips to make this a red, white and blue month - not just a single day.
For red... I'm thinking of strawberries, raspberries and watermelon. For super breakfasts featuring those ingredients, visit the Fruity Breakfast section of the site or take a look at smoothies and other breakfast drinks you could try with a beautiful splash of red.
For white... this year, I've decided to go with an off-white, almost tan. That's right. I'm talking about oatmeal: oatmeal recipes, the top ten reasons to eat oatmeal... I just want to go oatmeal-crazy! I might even swirl some strawberry jam and blueberries into some oatmeal and create an incredibly-American red, white and blue bowl of the stuff.
For as much as I love the 4th of July and all that goes with it, it's important to remember that an equally important holiday is just around the corner. Of course I mean National Waffle Day on August 24th.
I often wonder if there would be a National Waffle Day if it weren't for the 4th of July. If it weren't for our declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776, there would be no "National" to put in front of "Waffle Day". And certainly there would have been no U.S. Patent Office where Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York could go have gone to on August 24, 1869 to get a patent for what he called a "device to bake waffles".
Yes, American breakfast lovers owe a lot to the 4th of July. Here's hoping that the great spirit of American Breakfast lives on forever.
