Frosted Mini-Wheats Little Bites - Chocolate
From Kellogg's
Reviewed by Mr Breakfast on 3/4/2009
I had high hopes for this one.... chocolate-flavored wheat biscuits with a snow-white sugar frosting. It sounds delicious. The cereal pieces on the box look delicious. Was it delicious?
If you like kid's chocolate cereals like Cocoa Puffs or Count Chocula, you'll like the general flavor of this cereal. At first taste, there's something fun about a chocolate-flavored mini-wheat. It's as if the Frosted Mini-Wheats people said, "Let's just have a good time and make an old-school kid's cereal."
Unfortunately, that fun quickly turns to tragedy.
As milk soaks the cereal pieces, the biscuits get soggy and soft while the frosting stays unusually firm. It's a phenomenon I've never encountered in a cereal, let alone a Mini-Wheats cereal.
Imagine eating something that is usually soft and you feel something firm in your mouth. It feels like a mistake. The nearest comparison I can draw is if you poured milk over a cake that had firm toffee pieces in it. There might be some people that go for that texture, but I'm definitely not one of them.
Nutritional considerations: Each 52 biscuit serving of this cereal has 200 calories, 2 grams of fat (1 gram saturated and 0 grams trans fat), 45 grams total carbs, 6 grams of dietary fiber, 12 grams of sugars and 5 grams of protein.
In the end, I will remember this cereal with this equation: Good flavor + bad texture = sad cereal.
The price we paid: $3.89

Love, love, love this cereal! The perfect chocolate lover's healthy snack! I don't eat it with milk; instead I prefer to replace my cravings for chips or snackies with this cereal! Yum!

This cereal is amazing..especially for nighttime cravings... one bowl fills u right up. You defiantly taste choc chips in them when they get soggy which makes the cereal. As for the milk not turing chocolate... thats a good thing most people eat these for a healthy cereal. Go buy coco puffs or choc pebbles for the choc milk... this is the healthy cereal!!

I've never tried this as a cereal with milk. I LOVE it though as a snack. As a dieter, this is a great snack to take care of the afternoon sweet craving without ruining the day's efforts. Just 10 to 15 biscuits make a great chocolaty snack.

I love chocolate, and I love miniwheats. I'm going to have to try these. By the way, what did everyone think of the blueberry muffin flavor? I never got to try them. Are they worth it?

It looks like another one disagrees with you. The only person in the house that doesn't like it is my 8 year old daughter. My 9 year old and 2 year old eat it like candy, which isn't a bad thing. It's a lot healthier. The only thing we don't like is adding milk to it. Milk does seem to change the flavor.

Have to disagree with you, Mr. Breakfast, this cereal is AWESOME. Shredded wheat cereals get soggy in milk - that's just the nature of things. I believe the "firm" texture you mentioned isn't the frosting staying firm but rather the delicious little chocolate pieces that can be found inside most Little Bites. Chocolate chips don't get soggy in milk - that, too, is the nature of things! However, in my opinion, the best way to eat these little gems is by themselves while you're on the run or sitting at your desk needing a little something to snack on. They're a very filling, high in fiber and iron, a fairly good source of protein and they're SWEET! All in all, a great snack... or breakfast, in my book!!

I LOVED this cereal! I was done with the box in two days and I'm not even a chocolate craver! It makes the perfect lunch or snack, and when you let the milk soak into the cereal it takes like your eating hot chocolate!!! I cannot wait to get another box!

I'm sorry Mr. Breakfast, I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. The chocolate flavor is every bit as wonderful as other chocolate cereals (even reminiscent of Quick cereal, for those who may remember it). The box I have doesn't seem to give the same "soft/soggy" interior that you write of. In fact, the overall texture of each biscuit seemed to be pretty consistent.
I particularly enjoyed what seems to be a little chocolatey "surprise" found within the biscuit. It seems like a miniature chocolate morsel crammed in between the layers of wheaty cereal strands. It provides a perfect cocoa punch in every biscuit.
The only thing that I felt this cereal lacked was the usual chocolate milk delight that other cereals, such as cocoa puffs, provide. My milk was pretty much white and, well, tasted just like milk when I finished my bowl.
So overall, I wouldn't diss this cereal. It's certainly not my favorite, but I could see myself buying it again.
Price I paid: $2.50 (4 for 10)
