Introduced in 1991
"Get Up For The Gold!"
This cereal was described on the front of the box as a "wholesome, sweetened whole wheat and corn cereal with honey." Within a couple years of its introduction, sales of Wheaties Honey Gold had dropped significantly. General Mills introduced Honey Frosted Wheaties, a re-worked version of Wheaties Honey Gold, in an attempt to revive sales.
The back of the introductory box of Wheaties Honey Gold box gave a colorful description of its contents:
"Wheaties Honey Gold starts with wholesome grains of whole wheat and golden corn, which are baked and sweetened into crispy, crunchy flakes. Then we add just the right touch of honey for a delicious taste your whole family will love! Wheaties Honey Gold gives your family a nutritious start to the day. Just what you'd expect from the 'Breakfast of Champions.'
"For Great Taste and Wholesome Nutrition... Get up for the Gold!"
The first 8 ingredients listed on the nutrition panel were whole wheat, corn meal, sugar, brown sugar, wheat starch, corn syrup, honey and salt.
A 1992 television commercial for this cereal, used themes and imagery from the 1989 baseball film Field of Dreams to make it's point:
Strange Voices: If you make it... they will come.
Announcer: If you like Frosted Flakes, try new Wheaties Honey Gold. You'll discover the crispy flakes of corn and whole grain wheat that make it Wheaties and experience that delectable taste of golden honey that makes it honey gold. So if you like Frosted Flakes try new Wheaties Honey Gold.
Baseball Player: Is this heaven?
Little Girl: No, it's breakfast.
Another ad showed that General Mills wasn't shy about its attempt to steal market share away from Kellogg's Frosted Flakes:
Announcer: Yo Frosted Flakes fans... gotta sweet spot? Hit it with a sweet shot... Wheaties Honey Gold!
Jingle:
Crispy Corn and golden wheat
You can find crunchy sweet
A touch of honey is what it's got
Wanna hit the sweet spot
Hit it with a sweet shot...
Wheaties Honey Gold!

Reading his makes me sad and happy at the same time. How can Wheaties Honey Gold be improved and how can they go off the market while the inferior Frosted Flakes are near the top of the 100 best cereal list?

All these lost souls... there will be no Wheaties Honey Gold for a long time. One day, when we have perfected the technology I will pull from my photographic flavor memory the taste of Wheaties Honey Gold. Be strong my brothers, our day will dawn.

This was the only version of Wheaties I ever enjoyed, a shame that it's no longer around.
