Good Friends
From: Kashi
Introduced in 2001

Plus information about the Cinna-Raisin Crunch Variety.

Good Friends cereal started to appear regularly in grocery stores around 2001 and 2002, shortly after Kellogg's acquired the Kashi Company in 2000. The original cereal was promoted on the box as being a "high fiber trio of flakes, twigs and granola." The "twigs" are small cylinders of baked bran - usually grouped together as 3 or 4 connecting strands.

According to Kashi's website in 2007, they "baked up toasty whole grain flakes, crispy bran twigs and sweet granola. You'll get a different crunch in every spoonful, plus nearly 50% of your daily fiber needs per bowl."

The cereal includes an ingredient called "Kashi Seven Whole Grains and Sesame Flour". In 1984, the ingredients that comprise this flour were used to create the company's first product, Kashi Pilaf. The pilaf recipe laid the foundation for all Kashi products that followed, although in Good Friends cereal it appears 6th in the ingredients list after Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup and Corn Flour.

The cereal box for Good Friends is immediately recognizable in the cereal isle. Since it's inception, it's featured close-up images of two supposed friends on the front of the box. In the early years of the cereal, it was presumed that the pairs shown on the box were actual friends. But more recently, picture-perfect pairings depicting ethnic diversity give the impression that casting plays an important roll in creating these cereal box characters.

In 2003, Kashi introduced Cinna-Raisin Crunch Good Friends cereal. The box describes this variety as a "quartet of flakes, blossoms, granola and raisins". The "blossoms" are further described on the company's website as "crunchy fiber blossoms". Looking at the box, it's easy to see that the "blossoms" are a variation of the "twigs" found in the original variety of the cereal.

The nutritional profile for the Cinna-Raisin Crunch variety is similar to the original with the notable exceptions that the newer variety contains 4 less grams of dietary fiber and 4 more grams of sugars.

I love this cereal. It was very disappointing when I couldn't find it. I love that it stays crunchy until the last bite. It is especially yummy mixed with Trader Joe's Cranberry Almond Crunch cereal. I found some at half price at my store recently. Bought it immediately. Just had some this morning with my lightly sweetened homemade yogurt. I usually add a small amount of another cereal like granola but decided to try it without it. It was very yummy. I hope they come out with something as good or better. So far haven't seen anything that compares.

Fabulous, great tasting, high fiber cereal. When we find it, we clear the shelves, buy all we can.

I always giggle when I see this at the store. I've never had these, but who would want to be looking at the cover photos!
