Introduced in 1976
A fruit-flavored cereal with pieces shaped like stars, half-moons and planets. The half-moons also looked like bananas, while the planets looked a little like oranges.
The cereal was promoted as "the delicious space-shaped cereal that's out of this world!"
The back of one cereal box told "the unbelievable story of new Moonstones," detailing how the cereal is made by an interplanetary race called the Moonbeams and how the cereal's recipe is a cause for a war of sorts on the moon:
"Before we tell you about new Moonstones cereal, you first have to know about the moon. The moon, just like every story, has two sides to it. The light side and the dark side. So let's take the light side first. On the light side side, we have our basic honest, hard-working good guys called Moonbeams. They're led by our hero, Majormoon, who's the obvious choice to be the leader because he majored in cerealogy at Moon University.
"The Moonbeams are the guys you can thank for making delicious fruit-flavored Moonstones cereal. A cereal so delicious, so crunchy - that the formula is kept absolutely secret.
"Which now brings us to the dark side of the moon. And who lives there? The bad guys. They're called Moonbums and they're led by Bigbum, the biggest bum of all.
"They're the laziest bunch of bums ever to roam the face of the moon. As a matter of fact, they're so lazy that the only thing they ever work at is trying to get their dirty hands on the secret formula. So they can have Moonstones all to themselves.
"They've tried everything Bigbum could think up. Which isn't very much. But they're still trying.
"Yes, even now as you eat your Moonstones here on Earth, the Moonbums are plotting up there on the moon."
Known premiums in Moonstones cereal included free magnets, stickers, a free moon buggy, a free Moon Zoom racing wheel and a send-away offer fro Scotch Brand Tape.

I loved that cereal when I was a kid! I really miss it, man it sure was good! I still have several magnets that came in the cereal boxes. I didn't get the whole set though. The magnets hung on our old refrigerator for decades! When we got a new refrigerator, I took them down and put them away. I'd still like to get the rest of them.

I loved Moonstones and was heart broken when it disappeared from stores. I remember saving up enough box tops to send away for a Moonstones t-shirt. I wore that shirt until it disintegrated.

My present for Christmas in 1976 was a case of Moonstone cereal. I ate a whole box the first day. No other cereal had a similar fruity taste. Artificial fruits are just tastier.

I remember this crap. Saw TV commercials one Saturday morning and begged my mother to buy a box for me. Opened the box and half of the contents came crashing into the bowl in one solid brick. Gross. Never again.
