Raisins Rice & Rye
Introduced in 1980
A magazine advertisement introducing Kellogg's Raisin Rice & Rye in 1980 described the cereal like this:
"People of Raisin Persuasion! Introducing Kellogg's Raisin Rice & Rye
"People of raisin persuasion, we've got a whole new raisin cereal for you. Kellogg's Raisins Rice & Rye cereal.
"First, we blended the delicious taste of crunchy rice together with the satisfying taste of hearty rye into one incredibly flavorful flake. Then we added raisins! Raisins, raisins, raisins.
"People of raisin persuasion, awake and reach for your spoons. Make Kellogg's Raisins Rice & Rye a part of your nutritious breakfast. What a combination! For people of raisin persuasion."
1981 Raisins Rice & Rye Commercial Transcript
[ Three Scottish men in kilts (including the guy who played Dr. Bombay on Bewitched) sit in a row boat on Loch Ness. They all hold cereal bowls. One of the men puts down a telescope. (For ease of reading, we've assigned names to the men who are nameless in the commercial.) ]
Dr. Bombay: By gosh...
Sully: By gum...
Grey Bead: By golly...
Dr. Bombay: Let's pour a little more of this cereal called Raisins Rice...
Grey Beard: And Rye!
Sully: The Loch Ness monster is not in sight, so let's do what's only right... and enjoy our bowls of Raisins...
[ The Loch Ness monster's head emerges from the water behind the boat. ]
Dr. Bombay: Rice!
Grey Bread: And Rye! By unanimous acclimation, I proclaim our fascination... and since Nessie is a (sounds like "fable sayer"), let's get back to...
[ It becomes apparent to the viewer that the row boat is actually situated on the back of the Loch Ness monster. ]
Dr. Bombay: Raisins!
Sully: Rice!
Grey Bead: And Rye!
Announcer: Part of this nutritious breakfast... Kellogg's remarkable threesome.
In a 1984 episode (#1529) of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Mr. Rogers takes a trip down the cereal aisle where you can see Raisins Rice & Rye cereal along with other discontinued favorites like Pac-Man Cereal, Donkey Kong Cereal and Buc-Wheats.

Does anyone still have the recipe using this cereal to make muffins? I think it had sour cream as an ingredient. I contacted Kellogg's and they said they deleted the recipe from their files. The muffins made with this cereal are SO good. Please anyone!

I was so disappointed when they stopped making it. We went thru a box at least every week. Please bring it back.

I've been looking for an alternative that is like RR&R. It was my favorite. I think it was ahead of its time. I hope they bring it back some day soon!

RR&R was taken from us too soon, too soon. But at least it died doing something it loved, being eaten by me for breakfast, or sometimes dessert.
