Introduced in 1906
- In 1906, Kellogg's became the first cereal company to offer cereal premiums. Grocers were provided with copies of "The Funny Jungleland Moving Pictures Book" to be given to consumers who purchased 2 boxes of Kellogg's Corn Flakes. In 1909, the promotion was changed from an in-store give-away to a mail-in offer.
- In the early 1960's, Kellogg's promoted their Corn Flakes cereal with ads that featured corny puns. For instance: "What's the corniest state in the union? Corn-tucky". The company engaged radio stars Homer & Jethro to record a series of commercials which featured the catch phrase "Oooooh... that's corny!". Once the campaign made its way to televisions, "Oooooh... that's so corny" became a popular phrase to describe anything hackneyed and cliched.
- In 1907, Will Keith Kellogg promoted Kellogg's Corn Flakes with the Wink Day campaign. Ladies were encouraged to "wink a your grocer and see what you get". What the ladies got was a full-scale male prostitution ring that baffled police... joking... kidding... they got a box of Corn Flakes.
Developed by brothers, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and Will Keith Kellogg, this cereal was first introduced as Sanitas Toasted Corn Flakes in 1898.
The cereal was an extension of the brothers' first great cereal innovation, the wheat flake, which they'd introduced as Granose Flakes a few years earlier.
Initial sales of Sanitas Toasted Corn Flakes were lackluster, thanks mostly to the fact the cereal turned rancid shortly after purchase. By 1902, the Kelloggs had reworked the recipe to overcome the spoilage problem. Sugar was also added to the flakes to boost the flavor (much to the dismay of Dr. John Kellogg who considered sugar an enemy to the human body). Sales of the reworked cereal shot through the roof.
In 1903, a large ad campaign was launched under the direction Will Keith Kellogg. The cereal's popularity continued to grow. In 1906, the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company was formed.
Will Keith eventually bought out most of his brother's share of the Corn Flakes Company and, in 1925, changed the name of the company to the Kellogg Company.

In 2010, Kellogg's Corn Flakes listed the following ingredients milled corn, sugar, malt flavoring, high fructose corn syrup, salt, iron, niacinamide, sodium ascorbate and ascorbic acid (vitamin c), pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin b6), riboflavin (vitamin b2), thiamin hydrochloride (vitamin b1), vitamin a palmitate, folic acid, vitamin b12 and vitamin d. to maintain quality, bht is added to packaging.

Weren't these corn flakes originally invented to try and stop people masturbating... Read about John Harvey Kellogg. Fascinating stuff.

Yes, simple is better. Corn Flakes are simple but really delicious. Most of the new cereals introduced today have way to many things in them. Although Post Toasties were my favorite corn flake, Kellogg's Corn Flakes are really delicious.

My grandmother's grandmother (1915 or so) sent in 50 cents and 2 box tops and Kellogg's sent a child's Tea set. It was carnival glass. What company made these for Kellogg's? It looked very nice in the box. Kellogg's invited my Grandmother to come and take a tour and said they had one in the vault in 1982. Thanks!

I remember the 'ooooooh that's corny' corniest Kellogg's Corn Flakes jingle from the 60's. We had it here in Australia. Used to collect the plastic cowboys and native Americans, build the forts, stores, etc on back of box. Sent money to get the stagecoach and horses. Those were the days.

I have an old ad for Corn Flakes and can't find it anywhere... It has a blonde little girl with real crazy hair on it and there is a tiny box of corn flakes beside her and W.K. Kellogg on the box.
