New Product Review:
When the hot water hits these instant oats, you get a beautiful snoot full of cinnamon aroma. When the spoon hits your mouth, you say "This is sweeter than it should be." When you finish the bowl, you get a unique aftertaste to remember your breakfast by. Twenty minutes later, you still have that weird aftertaste and you'll never want to eat Weight Control Cinnamon Oatmeal again.
In their Weight Control line, Quaker has replaced all but one gram of sugar with "non-nutritive" sweeteners, the likes of maltodextrin and sucralose (sounds healthier already, right). There's six grams of fiber per serving to help you feel full. Unfortunately, this oatmeal tastes just plain bad.
The flavor reminded me of the film "A Clockwork Orange". In that film, the lead character, Alex (portrayed by Malcolm McDowell), was shown images of things he loved while being injected with a drug that made him ill. When you take your first bite of Weight Control Cinnamon Oatmeal, it reminds you of the Quaker Oatmeal you ate as a kid. There's a warm familiarity. As you eat more, a strange taste starts to permeate each mouthful - playing havoc on the taste of your childhood memories. By the time you're done, not only do you never want to have Weight Control Cinnamon Oatmeal again, but you'll have lost any desire for cinnamon oatmeal altogether.
On the plus side, this is a more filling oatmeal. I usually require two packets of instant oatmeal to fill me up. But it only took one packet of this oatmeal. But who wants to be filled up with something that tastes awful? This oatmeal should be called Cinnamon And Non-Nutritive Sweetener Flavored Weight Control Oatmeal.

Horrible, terrible chemical smell in the maple brown sugar. Just awful. It smells like curry, and smells the office up for days. My clothes and hair smell like curry when I go home from work when my coworker eats it. It must be some horrible chemical artificial flavoring that has this powerful smell. I'd recommend any product WITHOUT artificial/natural flavors in the ingredients. Better Oats Organic Bare Raw Oatmeal is excellent and very pure!

This is a hilarious thread. I worked in an office four years ago and this guy used to stink the place up with the brown maple sugar variety. I could not believe the power of this stench. This morning we were out of toast and my lady friend found an old pack we had. It was gross. When I returned to the old homestead this evening the smell was still strong enough to knock a horse out. We are wearing gas masks now but pretty sure we will be able to take them off tomorrow. Never had to deal with the urine problem but was delighted to read about it! Cheers.

I recently started eating oatmeal in the morning, it was quick, easy, and healthy. Picked up the variety box Apple, Cinnamon, and maple whatever, not bad. Next week, I thought I'd try some different flavors not noticing I picked up the "Weight Control" box. HUGE MISTAKE! It tasted like my oatmeal had been dried in chemicals, all flavors were like this. This box will find its way to the garbage. I thought it was just me, luckily I found this review or I most likely would not have purchased Quaker instant oatmeal again! Never knew there was such an oatmeal "weight control"... NASTY!!!

I love this oatmeal, especially the Banana Bread and the Cinnamon. The Maple Brown Sugar tastes good but the smell is so strong and my urine has smelled like it for days after eating it. I thought something was wrong with me. Overall I love the oatmeal but I don't think I will be eating the Maple brown sugar anymore.

I just tried Quaker's weight control brown sugar and maple syrup instant oatmeal. The smell was overpowering, the taste and texture (I made it with milk) was OK, but the maple syrup scented urine several hours later disturbs me. I see that some people also commented about having the scented urine problem. It's 24 hours later and still the scented pee. Reminds me of when you eat asparagus. I have the variety pack and will try the banana and cinnamon next. Maybe sticking to just plain oatmeal and adding cinnamon, maple syrup, bananas, etc. makes more sense than consuming the artificial stuff (sweeteners included) that is in this product. Will try others flavors and/or throw in the trash and not buy again.

After I add butter, raisins, and lite cream to it, it's delicious! But after eating it a few days, I have to lay off, as it makes my urine smell just like it! I'm also one who is very sensitive to the taste of artificial sweeteners, but I never knew it was in the oatmeal until I came across this column!

Okay, I'll admit the after taste is bad, but I still eat it because it helps with weight control, but I still like regular oatmeal better. But the worst thing about this product - mainly the brown sugar one - Is that is makes my pee smell like maple brown sugar for DAYS! I hate it!!! I will drink buckets of water to get the smell to go away and it won't. So now I can't eat it anymore. After about three days the smell went away, but now whenever I smell that horrible aroma I feel nauseous!

This oatmeal is fantastic just the way it is in the package and the larger serving with extra protein keeps me going until lunch. Sometimes just for variety I add in some items like extra cinnamon, one of those tiny boxes of raisins (about a TBL), a few blueberries or a TBL spoon of raw slivered almonds on top. I like to chop up 1/2 of a small banana in there some times or a little applesauce. Whatever I have on hand.
I hope Quaker makes this product forever. I love all three flavors. Banana bread is my favorite flavor.

A friend introduced this weight control oatmeal to me so I tried it because she swears by it. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the banana bread flavor. I even drive to a grocery store further away because they are the only store I can find that carries the banana bread only box. I realize the calories are the same as other kinds of oatmeal but the extra fiber really helps curb the appetite I think. My roommate loves the smell of it and so do I.
Not a big fan of the cinnamon flavor though.

My GF had this stuff lying around, so I gave it a try. I decided to look it up online to see how much of its name (weight control?) is marketing hype (I hate marketing.) It seems it's mostly fluff - just go to their site and compare the weight control with the normal stuff: both are 160 cals, the weight control has a few less carbs, a bit more fat, and has less vitamins. To be fair, though, it has a lot more fiber.
As for the taste: very sweet - almost like a dessert. It wasn't bad, though I have to admit that about five minutes after I was done a funky aftertaste developed. Nothing a cup of coffee wouldn't wash out.

When I first tried it, I tried the maple and brown sugar flavor I thought it was gross - the consistency and flavor did not appeal to me. However, given the protien and the fibre in it, I decided to give it another try with the cinnamon one, it wasn't so bad. I make it with skim milk and a teaspoon of honey and its actually a pretty good breakfast. Plus you get additional protein from the milk.

I eat this every morning when I get to work. Is it the most fabulous thing I've ever eaten in life? No. But it fills me up and I really don't think the taste is bad at all. I've had the cinnamon and banana bread flavors, I think the cinnamon is a bit less chemical-y. I'm pretty used to artificial sweeteners from drinking diet coke, diet tea, using splenda and equal, etc. I guess I'm immune to the aftertaste. As for the smell, I heat up each morning in the kitchen at my office, and usually the smell of the oatmeal is gone pretty quickly because someone else heats up their popcorn or fish! Seriously though, the smell might be a little strong. I have actually never made this in my apartment so I don't know how it would linger there. However, I'm pretty sure losing weight does take a bit of sacrifice and changing what we eat... if a smell lingering in your kitchen is enough to turn you off of it, that's your bag.

What I can't stand is that at almost 10pm, my house is still smelling like the maple & brown sugar oatmeal I microwaved 12 hours ago. I can't get rid of the smell in my house, it's about to make me barf. I'm so angry that they add something so heinous to the oatmeal that it permiates my whole house. This is terrible. I absolutely love oatmeal, and I was happy to find something that was high in fiber and low in sugar. However, the toxic chemical aftertaste is so disgusting that I discarded the remaining packets. Eating more fiber, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and/or losing weight does not need to come at such great cost. Eating smart and exercising are much better than ingesting chemicals.

This product is great! My co-workers tell me it has a "maple syrup and pancakes" aroma, nobody complains about it. If you used to eating all of the bad things for bfast, you wont like this, and you probably have issues loosing weight too. The trick with this oatmeal is to get it to your desired consistancy and MIX well, a simple stir-thru doesnt work, then, let it sit for about a minute, and adjust consistancy again if needed! Its a filling, just sweet enough bfast for anyone who is interested in having a filling, yet not to heavy bfast, with no sugar high, and no cravings an hour before lunchtime...Great product, buy it and don't like it? give it away, you are clearly too picky....

For me, there was not an aftertaste, but some are more sensitive to artificial sweeteners, I am not that thrilled with them myself and stick to natural sugar free sweeteners. If you don't like them, just make real oatmeal and sub in some oat fiber or wheat bran. That will give you the high fiber you want and lower the carb count.

I'm always in a bit of a bind when it comes to premade breakfast foods because I'm allergic to all milk products. This eliminates most cereals except the most basic or the most sugary, almost all breakfast bars, and any muffin or breakfast sandwich. However, I found some safety in instant oatmeal, it was fast enough for me to eat in 10 minutes, but satisfying nonetheless.
I bought this oatmeal hoping to take off some of my holiday weight, and I figured it would be free of milk products as all of Quaker's other oatmeals are. It wasn't and I only found out after I ate a whole package's worth. After spending a day sick in bed and not eating anything else, I read the package and discovered they added milk powder to help add that full feeling.
Granted, part of it was my fault for not reading the ingredients, but I feel somewhat wronged by Quaker by making what was previously a safe and hearty breakfast food into a veritable minefield for my stomach.

Hey, if you are trying to control or loose weight, you can't expect to eat foods that tase exactly the same as foods that spike your insulin levels and make you fat. This isn't meant to be eaten for the taste, it is meant to be eaten to loose weight/maintain weight and lower your cholesterol. It tastes decent, fills you up, and if you eat it instead of meals, the weight will fall off. The fiber helps keep you regular too.

I ate the maple and brown sugar variation this morning. It was awful. I wasted 3 bucks on this that I will never eat again. I eat the regular maple and brown sugar oatmeal almost on a daily basis, so I thought that I could get some added benefit with about the same taste. Wrong! I ate one bite and cringed. I will stick to my "regular" oatmeal from now on.

I think it is pretty tasty. I eat a packet every day as part of my new diet. I think there are healthier alternatives, like all natural products with lower carbs, but they don't taste nearly as good as this does. I generally like my oatmeal to be thick, so I only use a 1/2 cup of water instead of the recommended amount. But, I am full at the last bite, which is what matters. I'm going to stick with this for now and recommend you try it too.

Nasty - it's not just the taste but texture too. It was nasty glop that I could not add enough water to make it the right consistency.

The taste was a little off. I'm used to diet drinks and non-nutritive sweetened foods so it was not that bad. One packet makes quite a bit more than my normal Quaker or lower sugar alternatives. It really does help keep you stuffed. I give it better than average. Your miles may vary if you don't like lower sugar foods. I think it's overall a good product and will buy many more boxes!

I bought this mostly for the fiber and protein to fill me up so my stomach wouldn't be growling again an hour later. I didn't like the taste at all, so I added a teaspoon of brown sugar and then it was edible. The good news is that it really does fill you up to the point of feeling stuffed.

I think the taste is good. I enjoy all three of the weight control flavors.

This tasts so bad! I dont like it. But it's food that's good for you, so I decided to suck it up despite the nasty after taste just to be healthier. Hey, maybe one day it will grow on me.
