One thing you can count on when going to Carleen's is a breakfast made with quality stuff. I love bacon, and the bacon here is awesome, with a good portion (3-4 pieces). I usually order 2 eggs, rye toast, home fries, and bacon and coffee, so I can tell you about that. The eggs are always cooked perfect; bacon I get extra crispy so there is less fat - and they do that no problem every time. Usually a restaurant fails to deliver on a quality bread - I don't know where they get it, but Carleen's has this thick rye bread that is perfect toasted. In home fries, I look for staleness in the butter or variant (butter and oil) that they are cooked with. If the butter is left near the hot grill, or the grill is not cleaned, the butter goes rancid. Carleen's is fresh every time.....and that's why I go! Coffee refills are ok, average. I live in nearby Andover and go out of my way to go here.

Don't let "Coffee Shop" in restaurant's name make you wary-- it is more cafe than greasy spoon, but it is still homey and friendly. Upon entering, I was reassured of our choice when I saw a group of seniors hanging out. Service was friendly and competent, and the waitress instinctively brought out crayons and a children's placemat for our 4-year-old. (She also patiently explained to us non-natives what the lunch special, "American Chop Suey," was.) The pancakes (2 types) and home fries we had were good. Rated coffee refill rating as only average because the menu stated coffee "includes 3 refills." Any breakfast place that puts a cap on coffee, whether it's enforced or not, gets its rating nicked.
