It's been a few years since I've been up to Timberline Lodge, but I remember it quite well. I grew up in Portland and used to ski at Timberline. It is not in Government Camp, but six miles up the mountain at the 6,000 ft. level. The exterior of the lodge is what you saw in the movie, The Shining, and the entire lodge is quite extraordinary. The lodge literally sits on the side of a volcano (Mt. Hood), just above the timberline, giving you a view of the Cascade Mountains to the south with Mt Jefferson most prominent. The dining room itself continues the massive timbered style of the rest of the lodge and is gated off by large iron gates during the off hours. It is quite classy however, with linen napkins and your food arrives on fine china. It's not cheap, but the food is quite good and you will want to leisurely dine to soak up the atmosphere. If you live nearby or visit the area (about 60 miles east of Portland) it is definitely worth stopping in at least once.

I worked for the Hotshot crew at Government Camp during the summer of 1953 and in fact did eat breakfast at Timberline once. Will this count?

French toast - each person gets their own mini bread loaf, toasted perfectly. Large portions, old favorites with new combinations and Oregon specialties. Service - Perfect - Just try to keep your coffee or water empty for 60 seconds! And the view! 100+ miles over the tops of the Oregon Cascades. Formal service, but informal atmosphere - wear your slippers. Timberline is the closest thing the Pacific NW has to a castle. My favorite, even though it is a three hour drive from Eugene. Avoid ski season and you'll avoid the crowds.
