We made the choice to have breakfast at the Coffee Pot based on the reviews here. Thus we had high expectations. Not all of them were met.
Good: the kitchen! The food is great, we loved it. As well was the coffee, but this should be the case at this place.
Bad: the service! The waiters do not have "their" tables, but pick them on a "first come first serve"-basis. The ones who look for tips take as many as they can, the ones who just come here to have something to do take just a few. That is fine. But it turns out that you can only ask "your" waiter for any service; only your coffee might be refilled accidentally.
Our waitress did hardly bothering serving us. We got the wrong side dish - okay. We did not get a water refill - can live with that. Coffee was refilled by the waitress serving the next table - at least we got one. Did not ask at all if we were fine - we were. But when we asked for the check, she just sat down for another 5-10 minutes to chat with her colleague - until I got up and went up front to pay. Took another 5-7 minutes since she did not know how the system worked and got me the wrong bill.
We left 1$ for 37$ bill.
Try to get the young man; he was serving very enthusiastically. His guests were served pretty quickly and friendly while our waitress seemed to have us a bad time. With him we would have loved this place and gotten back next time!

I am a German, who has lived and worked for 14 years in Alabama and Virginia and I visited New Orleans often, professionally. I regularly skipped the hotel breakfast buffet for the Coffee Pot - and it's Blintzes with Strawberries. The coffee was good, even for my European tastes. And it was just perfect to sit in the little outside yard and enjoy the morning. I returned to Germany in 2000 and watched with horror later the news about Katrina. To know that the Coffee Pot still exists gives me great pleasure and if I ever come to New Orleans again, guess where I will have breakfast ...

Glad to see it's still there post-Katrina. I love the "Sis's Soul Food Omelette" for breakfast. The only thing I don't recommend is red beans & rice. They use Blue Runner canned red beans.

I was born in New Orleans but moved away when I was a child. Now I live just outside of New Orleans. I don't get down there much to eat. The Coffee Pot is my very favorite breakfast place. I discovered it while I was still living in Los Angeles and just happened on it one morning while being a tourist, strooling through the French Quarter. I have moved back to the Greater New Orleans area and make a point to have breakfast here on my birthday every year. Its my birthday present to myself. I love the shrimp omlette. As for the coffee, I ask for the coffee that we natives drink - coffee with chicory and strong. My birthday is coming up soon and I'm already making plans to have my breakfast there. Now that I've got that shrimp omlette on my mind, I may just have to go there this weekend too. LOVE IT!

I won't "slam" this place, but I cannot be real enthusiastic either. My service was just OK. The coffee was not up to par with other NOrleans places. No particular gripes about the food, but nothing spectacular. I expected more after the stellar comments from others. Finally, it did not open for B'fast till 8AM., and there was no posting of hours outside. Real B'fast lovers (like me) are up and ready for a meal long before this place serves. The primary reason to eat here seems to be the interior decor, which is Creole cabin authentic.

Just got back. What a find! Small inside dining area and bar but a good sized outdoor enclosed patio. The fried rice balls with powder sugar are excellent. Servers are a hoot and great sales people (bloody mary's and hurricanes). Outstanding corned beef hash and french toast and an atmosphere to die for right in the French Quarter. If you don't do the fancy brunch ... go here.

I had breakfast here over two years ago and I still rate it as one of the best breakfasts ever!
The coffee was hot, delicious and never-ending. My favorite was there famous Creole calas...a sweet rice cake that I will return for anytime I visit NO.

I am the leader of the German Maryland Jazz Band of Cologne - and I recommend this restaurant to everyboy who entends to visit New Orleans: Since I visited New Orleans for the first time, the Coffee Pot is my favorite breakfast place. I remember the times when banana plants had been in the patio, when the tables were rough and everything was earthy. Then I watched the artist when he painted all the beautiful pictures, I could read my newspaper ... and I loved my favorite breakfasts: Either the "plantation" - because of the calas - or the soulfood omelette. And I felt home when I stepped in and Willemina after a hug served coffee, orange juice, rye toast and potatoes with my meal, without asking for any order. She remembered...
And I am looking forward coming around easter with a group of 60 jazz fans to N.O. - and - hopefully "MY waitresses" are back, - because I missed them in january. But anyway, we will be there and support New Orleans and our Coffe Pot!! Doggy Hund, Kerpen, Germany

Looking for breakfast in the Quarter? The Coffee Pot --formerly Maxie's Coffee Pot-- is a good bet. It reeks French Quarter atmosphere. Don't go if you are in a hurry -- this is a place to linger a bit. Ask for Ms. Pearl --Ms. Pearl was waitressing there when I came to New Orleans in 1980, back when the restaurant was owned by a guy who named several dishes after his lover, Jonathan. The eggs Jonathan are very good, but the thing not to miss about the coffee pot is the Calas. These are creole rice/pecan cakes. As far as I know you can no longer get them anywhere else on Earth. Vendors used to sell them on the street in the Quarter. History: Eat it at the Coffee Pot

The service was typical New Orleans with a friendly and knowledgeable waitress who bent over backwards to make sure that my 2 year old was happy, so the rest of my family could eat. The omelettes were outstanding -- the grits were the creamiest and best ever. The biscuits were light, fluffy and homemade. The coffee was hot, strong, and good. We will definately be back!

Every year when I'm in NO...I stopped by the Coffee Pot for breakfast with Willamena...she is off the hook when it comes to serving her customers. She is very friendly and if you are confused about what to order...just ask her and the suggestions are always right on the money. My mom doesn't like grits...but last summer (Aug 2002) she fixed my mother Catfish and grits for breakfast...Mom ate like nobody's business.
Thank you Willamena and thank you New Orleans for such a treat...See you in October.
