Angelo's is, to me, a place to see and be seen. They do, in fact, have very good french toast (of which I consider myself a pretty good judge) and eggs and coffee, but I don't get the overall magical feeling I get elsewhere. The food is good but it's not the best value, and the vibe sort of kills it for me. I like a place that feels homey, or at least welcoming, and I think that in general the food is very good but usually not worth the line and price and atmosphere (which, don't get me wrong, is not by any means bad per se- it's just really not for me.)

Angelo's is an institution in Ann Arbor (sung about in a catchy song by local artist Dick Siegal). It's pleasant and popular and serves a decent breakfast. Their specialty is big slabs of toast made from dense homemade raisin bread. Service is uneven when they are busy. Coffee is typical diner-style. The food is pretty good but not outstanding. Hash browns are homemade but never seem to get the nice crisy brown edges that the best ones have.

I ate at Angelo's only once in my life--on a trip to the NASCO conference in Ann Arbor in November of 1995. I was in love and in heaven and I have dreamed of breakfast at Angelo's ever since. I remember eating the most heavenly french toast I ever tasted. I also recall a quite warm, friendly atmosphere. I think I could have gone back every day for a year and never been disappointed.

My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Angelo's is known for enormous portions and homemade bread. I'm partial to the hollandaise sauce (Try the Eggs Florentine: 2 poached eggs on homemade toast, spinach, tomato, Hollandaise sauce). All the bells & whistles: real maple syrup available, full service coffeehouse, sugar-cinnamon mixture in shakers on the table, fresh fruit... I don't have any behind-the-scenes info, but everything tastes fresh and made from scratch. Deli-style lunch menu available, as well.

Food is great. Try the corned beef hash with eggs and orange juice. The belgian waffles are also off the wall. And no meal is complete without the raisin toast.
I prefer Northside Grill (which has less waiting time, faster service, and a little bit more flair), but Angelos is by no means bad, or even just average.
No visit to Ann Arbor is complete without a trip to Angelos.

"Eggs over easy hash brown's and toast.." are the lyrics to a popular song about Angelo's. It is best known for it's toast, a super-thick-toasted-on-the-grill-this-might-as-well-be-my-whole-breakfast toast. You can pick it up at their Angelo's on the side (a side restaurant) if you're in a hurry, but i recommend going in and smearing a little omlette on that toast action.
