My kids grew up spending Saturday mornings at The Omelettry. GREAT groceries, funky wait staff, laid-back atmosphere...perfect start for a weekend in Austin. One omelette with sides feeds one Texan or six Oregonians + child. My youngest is back in town this week for South by Southwest, so we're headed to The Omelettry first thing in the morning. He's craving the gingerbread pancakes with honey.

Not sure what everyone was talking about.. this place is just bad... Veggies on omelette weren't even cooked, bacon was hard as a rock, place was dirty, the butter was a bad rip off of country crock. Austins diner was much much better.

The Omelettry is home to one of my all-time-favorite breakfast foods, Gingerbread Pancakes, but there are dozens of other wonderful items available as well, including omelettes, of course. The atmosphere is relaxed, the staff is usually tattooed, and incredibly friendly.

Since 1978, this little, friendly diner refuses to die. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu that will please the vegetarian as well as the carnivore. Sit at a wooden table, a booth, or a barstool on the white-and-black-checkered floor and taste the famous gazpacho($2.50) or vegetarian chili while waiting for your Avocado BLT. If you prefer morning grub like eggs, fries, pancakes and bacon homestyle, you have come to the right place. The Chili Con Queso Omelette($6.00) is loaded with cheese and covered with jalapenos and even more cheese. Pancakes filled with blueberries, bananas, chocolate chips, pecans or raisins are another specialty. The weekends are very busy, with standing room only as a common practice. No credit cards, checks or phone-in orders accepted.
