I love Rick & Ann's and have been going for years. They make the best french toast and red flannel hash that I have had.
The waits are long on the weekends but it does not seem that the staff is slacking. It is just busy!

Rick and Ann's used to be amazing but has seriously gone downhill. I used to drive from San Francisco all the time to have breakfast there and regularly endured those long long waits. But the last few times I went their I had consistently bad experiences. And after the last time, when my food was burned after waiting a half hour for it, I'm done with the place. Better to go to Bette's, La Note, Luka's, Home of Chicken and Waffles or Jimmy Beans among others.

Rick and Ann's is a very family-friendly cafe. Located across from the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, Rick and Ann's serves gourmet breakfasts. A little pricey, but the food and service is excellent. Always a line for brunch on weekends, so come when they open at 8:00am.

Food is fine--no complaints there. But the food is not so good that its worth the long waits and so-so service. Breakfast from walk-in-the-door to walk-out was a tortuous 90 minutes: sign up for a table, very long wait, get seated, long wait, give order, very long wait, get food, great, oh, yeah, cutlery, wait...and it goes on (order was sorta wrong, but who cares after an hour?).
The people working there are pleasant and thoughtful but the place is staffed in such an odd way (the waiters also double as hosts and coffee-fillers?) that you never really get "served."
Basically, the menu isn't anything better than what you'd find at Bette's or Venus or La Note or a billion other good breakfast places. So, I really don't reccomend it.

Berkeley isn't starved for breakfast places, but Rick & Ann's is definitely one of the top joints in the area. The food is fabulous and servers are very attentive.
Apparently, everyone in Berkeley knows how good R&A's is. If you go for weekend brunch with a group, you might be waiting an hour to get a seat. But at least it's not a terrible place to wait and there is a coffee shop right next door.
