this used to my favorite breakfast spot in the east bay, but it has gone downhill due to inconsistent food quality and the surly staff.
my last (final) visit i had to beg to for service and refill while the staff gossiped. the french toast was dry, like toast, and not soaked through with egg. when i mentioned it to the waitress, she just said she didn't really know much about french toast and didn't really care for it herself. yeah, that's what i wanted... her opinion.
the hearty Smoked Applewood Bacon i had ordered the previous visit was garden-variety baconburger fodder on my next visit... yet still had same name and same price. i was going to point that one out too, but the french toast response left me cold so i'm fussing about it here... and elsewhere.
go if you want to glimpse "what was"
avoid it you want good food and service.

Rudy's is good so long as you stick to the basics, like the "Deuces Wild" (2 pancakes or french toast, 2 eggs, 2 bacon or sausage). Avoid anything ethnic like chilaquiles (awful). Service is about average in my opinion, but that comes with the sort of punk atmosphere they are going for. They serve Peet's coffee which is top notch. A solid place to get breakfast.

The food is outstanding. I had the corned beef hash for Sunday brunch. It was made from scratch and was spectacularly delicious. Service was quick and professional. Breakfast is seven days a week with brunch on Saturday from 7 til 3:30 and *all day* Sunday.
