I'll try to explain our local phenomenon - The Hermitage Cafe. It is a dive although I wouldn't call it dirty. It's what we call "down home." It's where you go after you've hit the bars. It's a short order grill that's long on character. When you go in the wee hours of the morning you'll see everything from cops to party people. Cowboy hats and fishnet. Vandy kids and truck drivers. Not many places better for people watching in the whole city. Ask for Linda, the regulars call her momma. If you're lucky Dougy (in his chef's toque) will be on the grill. Come on down, let your hair down and have breakfast at the Herm.

The filthiest food establishment I have ever step foot in! The place should be padlocked! Rude servers, if you could really call it service, crude white trash is what they were, horrible service, and tattoo covered grunge people loitering about in large groups outside. Which explains that a filthy restaurant would attract filthy patrons. Don't waste your time or risk contracting something you may not be able to get rid of by patronizing this establishment.

I've eaten here for almost fifteen years at just about every time of day with great service and food every time. The cost is extremely reasonable, and I highly recommend trying any breakfast - you'll love the breakfast potatoes. Because the place never closes, eat there during the day for a good family meal. If you're out partying at night or early morning, the staff is accommodating to most revelers. While you're there, enjoy the old building, celebrity photos and, yes, the characters that drift through - especially at night.

This is ultimate down and out (or out and drunk) fare. Its cheap, the portions are huge, and you can eat next to some real charachters if you go in the middle of the night. Upside- you get a hamburger steak bigger than your face to go with your eggs and three potatos worth of hash browns for not a whole lot of money. Downside- you might get into a fight.
