I have gone to Mr. D's since child-hood. The restaurant has a very "small town" feel, but that's a good thing! Their breakfast entrees are amazing, as their lunch, and they make their famous donuts on site. Unfortunately the restaurant has closed, but you can still by their donuts at the same location. (Java Detour)

Presidential hopefuls of past several decades have identified La Crosse as all-American, and every four years they make campaign stops here, repeatedly, trailing mobs of media. Mr. D's is that typical small-town coffee shop that journalists love to stalk, to solicit the political opinions of the common man or woman. Fortunately, they can also get a good breakfast. Mr. D's is authentic: still emphasizes good food and service, without getting too cute or thematic. I believe they do their own baking on site. Located in a residential neighborhood of easy access, Mr. D's is a genuinely comfortable, unpretentious, and satisfying stop.
