This place is history. I love it I grew up in it. You're likely to see someone you know here who doesn't know you (a celebrity). Aside from that, yes, this is one of the two places that claim to have originated the French dip sandwich. Realizing the other place is a bar, I like this one better (and it's cheaper too!) They make an awesome homestyle breakfast that really fills you up.I used to come here when I taught in East Los Angeles and had to drive all the way for Riverside. It was a very relaxing way to start my work day. The steak and eggs are to die for!
About the sandwiches. I love the mustard. Just don't use too much.

5 bucks for a french dip you'll finish in about 3-4 bites. 65 cent lemondade you'll finish in 3 sips - no refills. Not such a bargain after all. My friend had to go back and order 2 more sandwiches (one of which we split), and a slice of pie just to get full. Warning: STAY AWAY FROM THE MUSTARD, unless you wanna burn a hole through your nose.

Located in Chinatown, down the street from Olvera Street and Union Station is Philippe's. You hear people pronounce it either Fill-EE-pees or Fill-EEPS, either one is correct according to those who work there. The restaurant is known for its French dip sandwiches--they claim to be the originators of it. They have traditional breakfasts of breakfast meats and eggs. They have sausage, bacon, and steak. You can get pancakes. You can get waffles. It's all reasonably priced and you will get full for about five bucks. Coffee is only 9 cents a cup, hence, there are no refills. And the place looks like something out of an O. Henry novel. Sawdust on the floor. Bar stools everywhere.
