Well. The Smiling Moon has the nicest people, best service and the best coffee around. I go there every morning to get a cappuchino for breakfast. Lost ten pounds in a month. Oh yeah.

First of all I must admit, I'm a bit of a coffee snob (Starbucks and Caribou espresso coffees) and like to feel welcomed. The Smiling Moon delivers! Big time! I spent a week in Baudette, Minnesota working half-days (using their free Wi-Fi). Yes, I spent 4 hours a day at the Smiling Moon for a week!

It is unfortunate that I discovered this gem of a cafe because now I know how good coffee is SUPPOSED to be and the only Smiling Moon is 10 hours away. I've had very good coffee before, however this is off the charts GREAT. It must be the water? The brew-master? If there were an award category for Best Cup of Coffee the Smiling Moon Cafe would be at the top of the list. So take my advice, if want to know what coffee SHOULD taste like visit the Smiling Moon in Baudette, Minnesota and say "Hi from Chris, the guy that spent a week here working on his laptop and inventor of that cool looking knife" to Linda the owner for me. Was in visiting the in-laws in Rainy River, Ontario. My niece and I stumbled across this quaint little coffee shop as we were finishing up our Christmas shopping. Came back to Canada and told my mother-in-law about it and we just had to make another trip over to the little town of Baudette. We found some awesome Canadian games and some flavoured syrup for our coffee. My mother-in-law was quite impressed with the diamond in the ruff and is now going to make the trip to The Smiling Moon more often with all her friends.

I grew up in Baudette and mourned the fading of the beautiful Rex Hotel, with its patterned tin ceilings and marble bar. What a joy to see the Smiling Moon set up shop there, paint the whole place a sunny yellow, serve up some of the best coffee I've ever had and provide a center for residents, visitors and the local creative arts. The food is as terrific as the hospitality--if I eat out in Baudette, it's usually there. The Smiing Moon is a community treasure.

Funky, comfortable, charming -- the original hotel bar and glass-door cabinetry make this place unique. Enjoy homemade bakery, an excellent cup of coffee, and a warm welcome from the owner -then sit and enjoy it all at your own pace. Baked French Toast was outstanding.

I was on a road trip with a buddy from England and we drove 2250 miles around the midwest in two weeks. This was the BEST coffee of the trip. It's a new place, I guess, but it has all the charm that you would expect from a coffee shop/brekky place in an old hotel in Northern Minnesota. The food and bakery items are freshly made by the owner, Linda, daily I guess - the two mornings we were inside we smelled Cinnamon Rolls and muffins baking. They were awesome! Specialty coffee drinks as well as a good cup o' joe, and the locals come in to hang out, read the paper and magazines in the place, and play scrabble. Great find!
