Ignore the 1/23/08 comment as utterly ignorant. I too am Mexican and found absolutely no race issues during my recent trip to Carlsbad. The waitress who served us was very friendly and went to great lengths to entertain my two children. The restaurant does have "regulars" who already know the drill of seat yourself and grab your own menus. I imagine I and my wife stood out as non-regulars, but that didn't change the service we received.
The food was good, the service great, and very reasonably priced. Would definitely go back again.

Al is a racist. My husband and I entered the cafe and stood there waiting for someone to acknowledge us. Nobody did. Finally after at least 5 minutes, my husband yelled across the diner to the owner, if we should seat ourselves. Al was forced to respond, "yeah". We sat down waited for a few minutes, then had to get up and get our own menus. We then waited for another 10 minutes. Then 3 white ladies arrived to the cafe and sat themselves. My husband was ready to leave but I wanted to verify that this was a race issue and not just a service issue. Sure enough, Al went rushing to the table with 3 white ladies and happily gives them their menus. You can imagine, I was feeling pretty upset at this point. I was obviously too dark skinned to be served, I am Mexican. I approached Al calmly and asked him "excuse me is anyone going to help us?" He looked very annoyed and said "oh, where are you sitting?" Although he didn't seem to have a problem with noticing where the white ladies were sitting. I then told him "Are we not light enough to be served?" He said, "Hey, no attitude." When in reality he gave me attitude to begin with. I then told him, "you helped those ladies immediately." We then left the establishment. So, I do not recommend this place if you have dark skin like I do. I'm not able to write a review because we were basically refused service. What's funny is the cooks and bus boys were all Mexican.
Very interesting....

"Al's In the Village" has that wonderful small town feel, with great people and awesome food! Just remember to ask for cheese with you're omelet and you'll do just fine. I highly recommend the "Breakfast Quesadilla" with a side of sour cream, you will not be left disappointed. Another favorite is the "Banana Pecan Waffle" sooo good! Al's is unique & has a friendly village atmosphere, they are Award winning for their breakfast & lunches, they also have great healthy salads & homemade soup! Al's is open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. & Friday open until 8 p.m. Enjoy the close beach and "Al's In the Village's" amazing food!
