If you've been to Amsterdam and eaten at the Pancake Bakery down the street from the Anne Frank house, this place isn't NEARLY in the same category. As a matter of fact, of all the pannekoeken I've had in Amsterdam, this place doesn't come close to doing those across the pond justice. Very sad. I'd had such high hopes when I heard they were opening in Chicago. What I had here were dry and tasteless. They bore some resemblance in appearance, but that's about all. Oh, well. I hope people who've not eaten in the Netherlands don't think that this is what Dutch food is like. Food there is amazing. Even without visiting the coffeehouses.

Pannenkoeken cafe serves authentic dutch pancakes (pannenkoeken means 'pancakes') and tons of other stuff too. I had the pannenkoeken with cheese and bacon and was extremely pleased. The portion sizes are big enough to fill you up and considering the quality of ingredients they use the prices are very reasonable. You can have a great breakfast for less than $10. Service was excellent too. The only downside is that this place is very popular on weekends and it is very small so it tends to require a wait and can be cramped. Try to get there early if possible - they open at 6am.
