I decided to invite the fam out for breakfast and wanted to try someplace new. Based on the previous reviewer's recommendation, I settled on Bar Carlo, despite the word "bar" and my being a non-drinker. The neighborhood isn't known for classy restaurants, but the exterior of the building looked recently remodeled with a conspicuous Dutch motif. I entered through the "lounge" area, which sported 2 pool tables, some board games, and a sectional couch strategically placed in front of a small TV with both an Atari and the original Nintendo consoles hooked to it.
The actual bar was in the other section, which was set up as a cute little cafe. There were no booths or large tables, but they were happy to push some tables together for our party. The menu had a nice variety, with additional specials available on the chalkboard. For those like me with a vegan/vegetarian in the family, the menu contained a surprising array of options, rather than the usual token Boca whatnot. Coffee was self-serve, which only the people who like their coffee/cream/sugar mix just so could truly appreciate. Prices ranged from $4 for a light breakfast to about $12.
We arrived at 9AM, and it was still quiet. By 9:30 the place started to fill up with an eclectic mix of hippie mums and dads to much more ordinary riff-raff. The staff was very friendly and tended toward the young and tattooed.
Arrival of the food took a bit longer than average, but that was quickly forgotten with the 1st bite. All 7 of us were quite happy with our selections. The seasoned potatoes were outstanding. I ordered the black forest ham and gruyere omelet with caramelized onions. Delicious! Everyone said they intend to go back to try other menu items. I have extended my list of 3 favorite breakfast places to a list of 4 now: Bar Carlo, Beaters, The Cameo (East) and The Gateway Breakfast House.

This place is the best! The service is fantastic, and the food is amazing. Each dish is a generous, thoughtful creation with a twist on the original and predictable. I couldn't be happier when I walk out of there.
