On a roadtrip from FL back north, we wanted to stop at foodie places (no chains). Of course Paula Deen's restaurant is in Savannah, but I figured there would be lines (there were) and it only got 2 stars so we looked for something else. We found B. Matthews Eatery on Bay Street. Located on a corner, this is actually a bar, which serves breakfast. The building is old, rustic and has charm. It is dark inside but you can look out the many windows, or, eat at one of the outside small tables. We arrived about 8am as it was opening. We were a party of three and requested something other than the small table she suggested, but the hostess did not want to put us at a 6 top because of the crowds that would be coming. Note: NO party of 6 came during our meal, and that table was not used! The hostess wasn't rude, but she also was very friendly. The waitress who first brought us our drinks was nice but she then turned us over to another waitress as soon as the 2nd waitress arrived to work. This one was not friendly and never even smiled once. So much for southern hospitality. Anyway, I was glad to see the menu was different and reflected some thought in offering a twist on some standards. We opted to order 3 dishes and share: Shrimp and grits, white chocolate banana french toast and a Garden Scramble with homemade biscuit.

The shrimp and grits were very good. I was pleased at how tasty the shrimp were - they must have been fresh (not frozen). The Garden scramble was tasty, fresh and not the run of the mill eggs and veggies. (Fresh hashbrowns smothered with scrambled eggs, spinach, goat cheese, mushrooms, green onion and cheddar cheese; served with a made-from-scratch biscuit.) Whatever herbs/spices they put in really made a difference. The white chocolate banana french toast sounded wonderful, and was recommened by our server. However, it was a disappointment. It was dry and I tasted no white chocolate nor did I find any egg batter on it as you could with french toast. With the maple syrup it was more of a dessert than breakfast item. I could see it served hot, with homemade ice cream and whipped cream.

The homemade biscuits were really different. Crusty outside and a drier inside but definitely enjoyable.

Between the character of the restaurant, the hip menu and delicious food, this was a winner for me. If the management would get more friendly service, it would be even better.
