Breakfasts are quite large, and usually pretty good. However, the chain tries to put its special spin on tried-and true recipes, and sometimes is off the mark. Their "corned beef hash" is merely shredded corned beef that they throw on the grill. No hash involved. A loser in my mouth.
On the other hand, their huevos rancheros has a healthy dollop of carnitas on them, which I've never seen before, and it makes the breakfast even better. And the tortillas that came with it were quite fresh and tasty.
I continue to look for independents when I'm hungry, but the Black Bear Diner is a good option for a chain, if you can handle the almost overwhelmingly-cute "bear" decor and marketing.

This is one of the newest Black Bear Diners in California based out of Mountain Shasta. The food is good, can be great at times but since this is so new only a few months old inconsistancy rules. We have visited many times with great quantities served. The the breakfasts are BIG, flavorful and filling. The cooks know how to make the eggs any way you like and get it right. The meats are well portioned and tasty. However they have made great crispy bacon one time, then murdered it next time. The steak and eggs was grilled to perfection and a great deal when I had it as managers special. The homemade country potatoes are good, great sometimes if early in the morning, but inconsistant. The huge biscuits are out of bounds good, they just need to get a better honey to go with these master pieces. The BEAR does great country gravy! So biscuits and gravy are better than anywhere else I have found in Sacramento. They have a very new but trained staff, with outstanding, some real outstanding waiters and waitresses. If you have a problem it is taken care of immediately. There is always a manager present who see to it that you are well taken care of, which is refreshing in so many ways. The Black Bear has a great personality and once they nail the problems will be the one of the best.
The pancakes are excellent with a vanilla and almost malt flavor. I and many other locals are finding the Black Bear and we all agree it has great service and some of the best breakfasts.
