  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg - beaten
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 3/4 cup grated Cheddar (or your favorite) cheese
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 pieces hot buttered toast
In a medium sauce pan over low heat, warm the milk. Soak the bread crumbs in the hot milk for 15 minutes.

In the top of a double boiler over medium heat, melt the butter and cheese together. Once melted, add the soaked bread crumbs and salt. Add the beaten egg. Stir and cook for three minutes.

Pour the cheesy concoction evenly over hot buttered toast and enjoy.


This recipe is from Mrs. Maurice A. Yoder. It's a thick, rich and creamy cheese sauce over hot buttered toast. Delicious!

My Nana and then my Mom used to make this when I was a kid and until my mom was too old and I have never been able to find her recipe. I have a suspicion that she used Velveeta cheese (I know, yuck). Hers was kind of lumpy (in a good way) and maybe that was the bread crumbs? I am going to try to make this soon. I hope and pray it tastes like they used to make it. I miss them so much.

I loved this as a kid, good for a gloomy night on some nice toast. Not very nutritious but not everything has to be! It will remind me of my Gram. Thank you!

I don't have bread crumbs. Is there a way to make this with flour? I feel like I saw a version like that somewhere. Anybody know?

Good cheese sauce. It's also good on eggs, ham and English muffins for a cheesy Eggs Benedict.
