We went 2 times during our 2 week stay in Portland. Once with my daughter and her family and everything was great. The second time was with my other
2 daughters and it was the same very good.
From the crickets French type toast, pancakes,
And the early morning specials. All was good and they were very nice to my granddaughter and grandson, with crayons and coloring menu. Will be back to enjoy the experience again.

Ive been hot and heavy into the local food flair for sometime, a food critic of my own aspire, and found this place some years ago, which evolved into a very good and establised breakfast house after years of below quality eats. If I recall, Around 2004 or 5 it took off and has gained ground as one of the best in town, changing up its menu to encircle a vast array of pretty much anything your morning brain could render. Recently, I returned from the SW to find lines of hipsters waiting to get in, with all kinds of happy bellys bursting out of the place. wow, this place has got an unearthly amount of menu items now and they are all fantastic, and all average as well. Thats right, average good old fashioned grub, like this city is good at fashioning, nothing more or less. I am pretty convinced that all the people who have anything negative to say on here or on any blog, etc.. just dont get it. Breakfast is supposed to be kinky, weird, hapless, and at times wonky, maybe uncomfortable, cranky, and beligerent too? lets make it!.. servers are lax, get over it. flys exist and I see them at my popular local watering hole, and anywhere food is and doors are swingin wide-- thats the hallmark of a BUSY, GOOD DIG! get it? if they arent perched on your sandwich making decisions about fly democracy, whats to worry? geez what some will do to make themselves completely miserable over a ten dollar meal. Is it so hard to go out with friends and just have a good time over some eggs and a coffee? what the heck its simple food, for simple times,, you breakfast backstabbers! look alive and feed on the commoners rules of foodservice/hospitality why dont you?, before your rude constipation takes over and you cant enjoy blinking or breathing either! We love the Cricket and all the other granular, cocky, offbeat fun-lovin, groovy-greasy places.. the triple D's , the ones who make it work! so us bleu collah folk can eat and enjoy!

Uh, hugest dump..? who wrote this? oh, when this person heard it was a no brainer for breakfast they got in that line(not the one at the cafe). We go all the time and have great service, excellent food, and our expectations blown away. Our closest neighbors can't stop talking about the place.. they just moved here from NYC and say they know a thing or two about a thing or two, and going out to Bfast is thier favorite thing to do, and that the Cricket would rock New Yolk! So open one there?.. AND! The homemade granola and fruit is our favorite, oh and the seeded toast? or rye, yummie! boyz... so never take that off the menu, but the pancakes are something really special -just had em last week and almost died they were so sweet and fluffygood. It is our kind of place that lives up to the champions of breakfast do-dad they print on the check! Its a tight fit in there so go early or just hang with the street fair outside on a saturday.. someone will have a story to keep you coming back for more laughs next weekend. Short of my not having bacon scented toilet paper, this corner craze has my heart (attack) hee!. By the way, best coffee cocktail I ever had at the Cricket, yes sireebob. Is camping out allowed because we want to be first in line tomorrow?

I've been the the Cricket several times, and have always thought it pretty decent, but my last visit was awful. The area of the dining room in front of the counter smelled like garbage, why, because the filthy bus tub area is right there! And it smelled like it had never been cleaned! Filthy! The service was also appallingly bad. Horrible attitude and not welcoming at all! It was like they had given up altogether on any semblance of caring about the guest. My server was constantly eating right in front of me and everyone else at the register!! And no thought was given to what could be overheard of the staff conversations/language. Can I just have my breakfast without hearing about someone waking up next to someone they didn't remember, but they didn't think they "did it" because their clothes were still on? The food was good, but can they please clean the place and try half an ounce of professionalism?

Can you say.. breakfast for the masses and then some? I hope so because the place makes even the harshest critics lay down the pen and enjoy the best food this side of the pecos. Spine snapping sized omelets, sanity erasing bakery goods, and every egg dish you can dream. The c-rolls rule, the staff is too cool and the damn eats make me drool. No kidding.. stop in from anywhere and get happy with a full bar and outdoor drive-by seating. Shucks! it's a morning masterpiece.
nuff said, now go!

We were hungry after a cross country adventure. This was our first "real" food in a week. Our friend took us to the little place that was always crowded and everyone loved down the street from her place.
Four of us came. One of us ate.
The biscuits were like stale rolls on a plate with a dollop of gravy. Horrible. Maybe I am just used to the east coast, but the definition of a biscuit and a roll should be the same trans continentally at least.
The waitress did not ask if our food was ok after she served us, no refills on coffee, and as she laid the check down she asked if we needed a box, we laughed in her face, told her of our unhappiness, and she did not even refund any of the three plates out of the four we ordered that were not eaten. At all.Can we say NO TIP FOR YOU! Overall, horrible experience. This was a little over a year ago so things may have changed. Just stay away.

My husband and I went and had a great breakfast while at The Cricket. It reminded us a lot of some really cool places in Berkely, CA. that we would eat at when we lived there.
The food " hit the spot " , service was good, atmosphere was nice & it was clean. It was a pleasant place to have a good meal. Looking forward to more good meals there.

Cricket is by far the best breakfast/lunch joint in PDX. I am a meat-eating breakfast fanatic and absolutely die for any of their veg options. Top off any scramble or biscuits/gravy with a Bloody Gary (that should be trademarked) with house-infused vodka and you have entered into gastronomical shangri la. If you don't like the low-key atmosphere and no frills dining then move back to So-Cal where you can have all the smoke blown up your rear that you want. Cheers!

I had heard good things about this place. The food was pretty good - really good buttermilk pancakes, eggs a little overdone, but not bad. However the place was FILTHY. There were about ten flies hovering over our table with no attempt by the staff to get rid of them (and I'm not exaggerating about the number of flies). Also, the floors were really dirty. I skidded on my way to the bathroom from the sheer amount of dirt, grit and crap on the floor. Gross. I would have gone back again if it weren't for the hygiene standards. If I hear that they've cleaned up, I'll go back, but otherwise, no thanks. I'm no neat freak, but if this is what their public areas are like, imagine how they keep the kitchen....

I find it ironic that their web site claims the basis of this cafe is that "the customer is always right" HA! Children welcome? I don't think so. This open-kitchen restaurant not only lets you in on the behind-the-scenes action but the foul, foul language, lots of obscene gestures, and the "I don't give a crap" attitude. This could be one of the coolest, funkiest, neighborhoody cafes in Southeast, but the staff completely ruins that thought. NEVER,EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

Have you been there? Why not? The essential breakfast joint of the west. A creative concoction of side orders or an inventive build your own list makes for a lazy susan of ideas with a menu that offers the moon. Whether it's mega fluffy pancakes slathered in butter and warm fruit syrup or a bowl of their famous and hearty oatmeal dotted with almonds and bananas it is what a bountiful breakfast is all about. Dive into a creamy cup of their fine house roasted coffee and you will know you have found the secret of southeast portland. With a casual service mantra and the kitchy comfortable dining rooms it is a becoming and delightful find worthy of many return visits.
